Initiative in Bremen: Make help for women visible against violence!

An alarming sign against violence against women and girls is set! On the occasion of the international day against violence on November 25, 2024, the central office of the State Women's Commissioner (ZGF) starts a powerful initiative in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Supported by over 50 partners, including housing companies, police and educational institutions, the online portal www.getwaltzägfrauen.bremen.de is moved into the spotlight. Posters, stickers and flyers should draw attention to the help offers and give the victims of violence a voice.

"We want to reach people where they are in everyday life," explains Bettina Wilhelm, the state women's women's representative of Bremen. The initiative aims to break the shame, which keeps many women from looking for help. Alarming cases of partnership violence and sexual assault are registered in Bremen every year. In 2023, 2,611 cases of partnership was recorded - a terrifying increase of 36 percent compared to the previous year. However, the number of unreported cases is much higher because many affected people do not file a complaint.

frightening statistics and help offers

The police crime statistics show that women are still often threatened by (ex) partners. In 2023, 189 cases of rape and sexual coercion were recorded. Femicides are also a worrying topic: Between 2019 and 2023 there were nine homicides in women in Bremen through their (ex) partners.

The online portal www.chetzaltungfrauen.bremen.de offers a comprehensive overview of aid and advisory services that are tailored to the specific needs of those affected. The information is available in several languages and cover various forms of violence, including domestic violence, stalking and digital violence. This initiative is a crucial step to raise awareness and offer the victims the support they urgently need.
