Bremen in church asylum fever: over 200 cases and growing protests!

In the state of Bremen, there are alarming numbers on church asylum cases that are well above the nationwide average. In 2024, Bremen recorded 202 cases, which corresponds to about 29 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. These figures were published by the Federal Statistical Office, and they show a clear discrepancy with Hamburg and Berlin, where the numbers are only 2.88 and 4.44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Buten and inner also reported that the Bremen inner department is suspecting that many people travel to Bremen to apply for church asylum.

At the center of the debate is the need for re -legal protection for hardship traps from asylum seekers, which always entails protests from the population. Already at the beginning of December there was an urgent demonstration in which over 1,000 people took to the streets for the inviolability of the church asylum, and smaller groups blocked the deportation of a Somalier. Pastor Bernd Kuschnerus emphasizes that the church asylum does not serve to guarantee permanent stay, but to adequately check every individual case.
