Cycle path in Roth: After ten years of planning - a wall blocks the way!

In the Bavarian city of Roth, a bike path that has been planned over a decade has become a failure. The newly built bike path should connect the new development area with the old town, but it ends abruptly after just a few meters against a wall. Despite the completion of the bike path, cyclists cannot use it due to the wall that is privately owned by a business owner. Uwe Heyder, the owner of the adjacent building, criticizes urban planning and explains that it has been "never built on a wall". This reports chip.de .

city administration reacts calmly

Despite the obvious planning errors, Mayor Andreas Buckreus (SPD) is pragmatic. He suggests that the city waited for the situation, since the ownership relationships may change and the bike path could then be used. However, the current owners are not very cooperative, and it seems unlikely that a solution will be found in the near future. The bike path will apparently only remain as an unused infrastructure.

In Berlin, on the other hand, the city shows how to make cycle paths sensibly. The Mauerweg in Berlin offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of the city on two wheels. While the wall has largely disappeared from the cityscape, there are still remains in many places that are reminiscent of the division. Cyclists can cycle past in historical places such as the East Side Gallery, the longest preserved section of the wall and thus experience the eventful history of Berlin up close. The tour begins at the Bornholmer Straße border crossing and leads past important memorial sites of the wall, while the Mauerweg is also a popular place for tourists.
