The mysterious fate of the Friedensengeln from Bad Segeberg
Bad Segeberg, Deutschland - A mysterious chapter of the history of Bad Segeberg has again excited the minds: the legendary “Friedensengel” Nike, who stood at the Cemetery until 1934, was stolen by unknown people on the night of May 21 and sunk in Lake Große. The bronze statue, an image of the Greek goddess of victory Nike, was kidnapped by members of the Hitler Youth, who disrupted Nikes bare breasts, like Peter Sauer, a local local researcher. The angel was laboriously removed, loaded into a boat and finally sunk in the lake. "Where the statue is located exactly today remains in secret," reports Sauer, even after decades, their whereabouts remain a mystery.
The search for the statue
The circumstances of the disappearance have fascinated people to this day. Sauer, which has researched the statue for years, is convinced that the figure was recovered from the water during the war, since bronze was extremely valuable at the time. Part of the material could have been owned by the perpetrator at the time. These later brought the laurel wreath that the angel was wearing in his hand, but this too was lost when the main perpetrator came to the captivity.
The Great Segeberg Lake, around which numerous hikes are now about, has an idyllic side. Along a 7.5 km hiking trail, you can experience the beauty of nature while circling the lake. The hikers not only enjoy the view of the diverse flora, but also the closer sights of Bad Segeberg such as the Kalkberg and the shops in the old town. The picturesque environment regularly attracts visitors and offers the perfect opportunity to be inspired by the story and the stories that the lake has, as TravelinSpired
The central question remains, however: where is the sculpture? Perhaps one day a happy diver brings the enigmatic heir from Bad Segeberg to light again. Until then, Nike remains a symbol of a moving past and an emotional heritage for their surroundings.
