Fats with apples: diverse delicacies in the NABU visitor center Rühstädt!

In the picturesque courtyard of the NABU visitor center in Rühstädt, everything revolves around a popular range of fruit: the apple. The variety of apple varieties attracts the attention of visitors, and the event promises to offer both pleasure and education. Courageous experiments have gathered, some with their own apple stocks, and bring right anticipation.

The fresh apples, including the old variety red-stripped yellow sheep nose as well as more well-known types such as Boskop and Gloster, are ready to be processed. Anne Fronia, an employee of the project, explains the goal of the event: the sensitization of the public for the incredible bandwidth and the possible uses of these fruits.

The processing of the fruit

Preparations are already underway: large enamel bowls are available on wooden tables, and a juice press and apple shredder are waiting for their use. A total of around 15 participants are on site who are enthusiastic. "I have heard a lot about the processing of apples, but this is my first time that is right," says a visitor. Her curiosity is awakened by the event "Diversity of the apples", which she discovered online.

The family from Tangendorf, which has traveled specially, shows special interest in sustainability. Jana Werner says: "It's just great that the apples are being used here. Every year there are so many apples down, I always wanted to learn how to process them and I hope the children have fun."

A first excursion leads the participants to the orchards, where they collect apples together and learn more about the ecology of this unique biotopes. While the parents speak informatively with the NABU employees, the children explore small information signs with zeal that explores the animal species living here.

The importance of streuobstwiesen

Anne Fronia emphasizes: "Purpose meadows are important habitats for many plant and animal species. There is a large variety here that is threatened with increasing neglect, since the meadows are not considered economically profitable." The aim of the event is to point out the public to the ecological value of these areas.

The old Prignitz apple varieties, such as Jakob Lebel and mother apple, show up in their full splendor on the meadow of the visitor center. Other types of fruit like Mirabellen and cherries also grow here. While the participants find out more about the different properties of the apples, it quickly becomes clear that this year's apple vintage is good; The trees have carried plenty of fruit and the harvest is promising.

After the harvest, we go back to the visitor center, where the collected apples are immediately washed and prepared for processing. The little helpers are enthusiastic about the apple cutting machine, which enables them to cut and peel apple rings in a simple way. These are then dried in special dehydrates, while the juices and musical shapes are already expected.

The event also attracts long-term visitors. Anne Brandt from Wittenberge, who visited many workshops in the NABU visitor center, says: "I don't have my own fruit tree, but the topics that are treated here are exciting and educational." With every new workshop in which she participates, she discovers multifaceted perspectives on the subject of fruit and nature conservation.
