S-Bahn chaos on the Westkreuz: Two weeks without trains for commuters!
S-Bahn chaos on the Westkreuz: Two weeks without trains for commuters!
Olympiastadion, Berlin, Deutschland - For commuters in Berlin it gets serious! From Monday, November 18, two weeks full of challenges are imminent, because the S-Bahn will be completely shut down between Charlottenburg and Grunewald as well as Olympic Stadium and Spandau. The reason is urgently needed renovation work on tracks and switches on the Westkreuz node. The construction work lasts until November 29, and the ring railway remains unaffected by the measures. But that's not all: the S1 and S7 exchange their final stations in the south, which means that travelers between Wannsee and Potsdam will have to drive with the S1 in the future!
The effects are enormous! On Saturday, November 23, Hertha's second division game against Ulm in the Olympic Stadium will also fall into this critical period. Fans of both teams have to switch to the BVG underground, while replacement buses that arrive at the Olympic Stadium are diverted via Heerstrasse during the game. For passengers who travel to Wannsee, Potsdam or Spandau, however, there is good news: The regional trains of Bahn and ODEG are not affected by the construction work and offer an alternative travel option.
replacement traffic and timetables
The S-Bahn lines will drive as follows from Monday, 4 a.m.:
- S1: Oranienburg - Wannsee - Potsdam
- S3: Erkner - Charlottenburg (also in night traffic on weekends) and Olympic Stadium - Spandau
- S5: Strausberg Nord/Strausberg - Charlottenburg
- S7: Ahrensfelde - Charlottenburg and Grunewald - Wannsee
- S75: Wartenberg-Warschauer Straße-No extension of Mon-Fri during the main traffic times to/from Ostbahnhof
- S9: Mon-Fri Airport BER-Charlottenburg and at the weekend BER Airport-Schöneweide and on all days Olympic Stadium-Spandau
Two bus lines are available for replacement traffic: Bus S7 and Bus S9, which drive important stops in order to enable commuters to run smoothly. The stops are strategically chosen to make it easier to switch and to keep the effects of the construction work as low as possible. The next two weeks will be a real test for many!
