Parents convicted of infant death in Potsdam: shocking judgment!
In a shocking case of homicide by omission, a 35-year-old father and his 31-year-old partner in Potsdam were convicted. The district court spoke the verdict on Tuesday: the father has to go to prison for three and a half years, the mother for three years. The two had failed to help their newborn in July 2022 in their apartment, which led to his tragic death.
The cruel birth
The indictment describes the cruel situation: the woman gave birth to the fully developed child over a toilet pool and left it upside down. The infant died of circulatory failure and shortness of air. Only when the mother passed out did the partner called a ambulance, but it was too late - the emergency services could no longer help the boy.
Although the accused claimed not to know anything about the child, the court found that they knew very well. Witnesses underpinned this assumption, and the court was convinced that the couple had deliberately targeted rescue acts. Psychological experts had stated during the trial that the two were quickly overwhelmed due to their below -average intelligence in crisis situations.
Both parents live in Potsdam-Waldstadt and got another child in 2024. It is considered whether the mother can be granted an earlier open execution so that she can take care of the new child. The judgment is not yet final.
