On Friday morning, a devastating fire broke out in a retirement home of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) on Beethovenstrasse. At 9:18 a.m. the emergency call was canceled, as flames and poisonous smoke from a room on the third floor. The fire brigade was quickly on site and used a turntable ladder to combat the inferno from the outside while the door was closed to the burning room.

The 88-year-old Rudi H. from Lübbenau lived in the affected room, who worked as a top waiter in the traditional restaurant "Luna" until closure. Tragically, the firefighters only discovered the body of the pensioner in their search. The police confirmed that there was no evidence of external influence and that the fire probably ran out of a trash, but the exact cause is still unclear.

23 people lived in the affected building wing, 22 of whom had to be brought to safety via corridors and stairs - partly in their beds! The Situation was tense because the elevators could not be used because of the power failure. ASB home manager Alexander Kohl was affected by the loss of Rudi H., but was relieved that the rescue operation did not have any worse consequences. Four employees and nine residents were examined on site for suspected flue gas poisoning, but only one resident had to go to the hospital for "observation".
