School start: Bürgel comprehensive school magically attracts 180 students!

In the Havelland, the number of students in secondary schools have increased significantly after the summer holidays. In Rathenow and Premnitz, 331 students have changed to the seventh classes. The Bürgel Comprehensive School, which recorded a variety of first wishes due to its high school, was particularly in demand. With 180 students who provide this school as a first wish, it is the most popular educational institution in the region.

The Bürgel comprehensive school offers a total of 162 places in the seventh grade, but unfortunately could not accept all inquiries. Many students therefore had to switch to two or even third-party requests. The rush shows how important a comprehensive school selection is for parents and students.

School Place: The demand is high

The Bürgel comprehensive school is not the only school that is confronted with high demand. The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gymnasium in Rathenow first desired 93 wishes, but was only able to record 72 students. Twelve inquiries remained unfulfilled, which increases the pressure on the school management to design a fair selection process. The allocation takes place in the so-called Ü7 procedure, in which students and parents specify their desired school and are selected on the basis of grades and recommendations from the primary school.

The procedure is designed to get students with the best opportunities for their desired place. Students who apply for a high school have to prove that their grades do not exceed a certain average in the subjects of mathematics, German and a foreign language. If the application is successful, trial lessons are also a prerequisite for admission.

Fortunately, the Duncker secondary school in Rathenow and the high school Premnitz were able to meet all first wishes. The Duncker secondary school accepted 37 first requests and was able to record an additional 13 students with a second wish. This shows that not all schools have to deal equally with the lack of space.

The distribution of places: a differentiated procedure

The Ü7 process is differentiated: If a comprehensive school has been more inquiries, for example, as places are available, a third of the places will usually be assigned to students who strive for the Abitur. Grades, recommendations and the proximity of residence are crucial for the award.

A total of 297 students received their place at the school of their choice, which shows that the allocation of school places at secondary schools worked quite well despite the challenges. However, the exact figures about how many students were shifted in private or outside the district are unclear.

The Situation at the schools in Rathenow and Premnitz remains exciting. The pressure on schools to be able to provide sufficient places is high and the developments of the next few years will show how this challenge is managed.
