Nauen saves forgotten kinoperle: revival of the theater of friendship!
Nauen, Deutschland - The city of Nauen in the Hvelland has taken a pioneering step to buy back the historical “theater of friendship”, a cultural heritage from the GDR period that has been in decay for three decades. As rbb reported , the city council unanimously approved the purchase of the empty building. The purchase price is 795,000 euros after an earlier offer was rejected over one million euros, since the city could not finance this. The building, once a popular place for films and cultural events, was built in socialist classicism in 1956 and offers an area of 2397 square meters.
Mayor Manuel Meger (LWN) expressed that the repurchase of the theater is considered a duty to preserve a valuable piece of city history. The talks with the current owner took off last September after the mayor had previously unsuccessfully tried to move the owner for sale or renovation. Now the city is required to revitalize the building in need of renovation, which is important not only for the cultural landscape, but also to improve the cityscape, such as MAZ also reported .
future of the theater still uncertain
The Nauen citizens can now be actively involved in planning for the future use of the theater. After the planned completion of the purchase by March, a citizens' workshop is to be carried out to collect ideas. Residents already express the desire to revive the old cinema and create a space for cultural events, because such places are missing in Nauen. The city expects that the reopening can take place in three years at the earliest, even if the exact plans still have to be developed.
