Clemens Herche: Natural Bursch with passion for Westhavelland
Clemens Herche has taken on the role of the south base manager in Milow at the Naturwacht Westhavelland since April this year. He became active in this position on May 6th and his enthusiasm for nature is unmistakable. Herche, who grew up in Northern Thuringia, has felt a special connection to nature since childhood. He remembers: "If you live in the village, you are closely connected to nature anyway." This is shown in his great joy in working outdoors, where he enjoys the first crane calls of the morning and the calm of the dawn.
The beginnings of his professional career were far from nature. Clemens Herche started his career as an organ builder and worked in this profession until 2009. But even then his passion for nature, which moved him to start studying landscapes and nature conservation at the University of Sustainable Development in Eberswalde. He deepened his training with further studies in wildlife ecology and wildlife management in Vienna.

herches engagement in nature finally led him to Central Asia, where he carried out a project for monitoring the endangered screw goats on behalf of the World Natural Protection Union IUCN. "We have written a report on our work to help secure the existence of the goats through defined hunting rates in the Region," he explains and continues that the population already increases to over 2000 animals.

Now Clemens Herche is responsible for operating environmental education for young people in the southern part of the Westhavelland nature park and carrying out bird monitoring. "This is exactly my thing. I like to be outside in nature. Sitting at the desk is nothing for me," he says of his new job. A typical working day looks for him in such a way that he sets off at 6 a.m. to count birds and then plan various projects in the great outdoors with a youth group, the "Havelbibern".
The projects are diverse, they range from garbage collections to discovering tours and the protection of toads. "In the evening it goes into the protected area again to watch other animals," adds the nature parker. Clemens Herche is part of a team of five rangers who take care of the over 1300 square kilometer nature park, which is considered one of the most water -rich areas of Brandenburg.
A central task for Herche and his team is to get in touch with the visitors of the park and farmers in order to promote awareness of nature conservation. "It is important to sensitize people to nature conservation," he emphasizes. Especially in times when more and more people discover nature, it is important to steer the flow of visitors in such a way that the preservation of animals and the natural environment is guaranteed. The team does not see itself as a police, but as a sponsor of a responsible dealings with nature. "We hope that people will develop a conscience for nature through our Enlightenment," confirms Clemens Herche.
