Brandenburg's schools: cell phones, manuscripts and new teachers!

Teltow-Fläming, Deutschland - Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD) has informed in a statement about planned changes in education in Brandenburg. Freiberg commented before the SPD party conference to continue his office as an education minister and addressed important points of the coalition agreement between the SPD and BSW, in particular an upcoming mobile phone ban at schools. According to this, private cell phones should be cleared away or closed at schools in the future. The aim of this measure is to carefully introduce primary school children to the digital world without neglecting the promotion of the manuscript.

Another focus is on the basic skills reading, writing and arithmetic in primary schools. The minister found that there is a challenge in Germany and Western Europe because many students do not reach the minimum standards. In addition, the composition of the student body changed, which increases the need for funding. Freiberg emphasized the need to strengthen the manuscript, although no mandatory grading or beauty lessons were introduced. In addition, writing with the hand is emphasized as important for learning success.

Latest developments in teacher training

For the early identification of students with deficits, the individual learning status analysis is also introduced, while language status findings are preferred. The will of parent should have priority when schooling, although no changes are currently provided on the school start. In Senftenberg, a dual teaching degree with a paid legal trainee is introduced. In order to support teacher generation, Brandenburg plans to train and hire one-subject teachers, including from Poland. In addition, discussions about allowances for teachers in rural regions are planned to offer them an improved attractiveness. Schools should receive more flexibility in the job occupation in the future in order to be able to include other specialists.

As part of the Digitalpakt School 2019-2024, teachers receive a variety of support from advisory, advanced training and networking offers, as reported by the website of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport Brandenburg. The further training measures are based on the European framework for the digital competence of teachers (Digcompedu) and around 5,000 central and regional qualification and further training events take place per school year. It is also sought that at least 20 percent of these events have the focus of "digital media education", which was only around 5 percent before corona pandemic.

In addition, external providers will offer further training, some of which are tailored to specific digital tools. In Brandenburg, support from adult education centers in technical issues and applications is also strengthened. 25 media and digital consultants are available in the advisory and support system, of which 12 are specifically responsible for the "school cloud advice".

These initiatives show the efforts of Brandenburg to strengthen both digital and traditional skills in the field of education and to align teacher training according to the new requirements in order to ensure comprehensive support for the students.
