Barnim cheers: 5,700 households enjoy fast internet now!
In the Barnim, broadband expansion has achieved significant progress that enriches both private households and institutions. After three years of intensive construction work, the district of Barnim successfully realized a project in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom, which has connected around 5,700 households and 65 schools in 25 municipalities to the state -of -the -art fiber optic network. The ceremonial conclusion of the project took place on October 10, 2024 on the site of the Academy of Health in Eberswalde, where the successful connection was recognized by a symbolic act.
District Administrator Daniel Kurth optimistically commented on the future of the region: "We create location advantages that need to be used. The entire region will benefit from it." He emphasized that the district has taken the fiber optic expansion into its own hands to increase the attractiveness for citizens and the economy. Carim Seigel from Telekom also emphasized the importance of the project: "We have taken a crucial step towards digital future."
The course of the project
The official start for this remarkable expansion was already in 2017. At that time, the application for funding was initiated in order to secure the necessary financial resources according to the guideline to promote broadband expansion in Germany. In 2018, Telekom was finally selected as a partner. The expansion itself began on March 17, 2021 at the Schwanebeck high school. As part of the project, impressive 1,650 kilometers of fiber opted were laid and 230 kilometers of civil engineering work and almost 200 new fiber optic distributors were built.
The investment of 29.7 million euros was made possible by the federal, state and the district's contributions. These financial means are of crucial importance in order to equip rural areas with the necessary digital infrastructure. This not only enables applications such as home office, homeschooling, smart home and telemedicine, but also more efficiently.
Another important step was taken in January 2024 when TÜV Rheinland carried out test measurements of the new infrastructure on behalf of the federal funding agent. These exams included several locations, including four schools and three private addresses, and fortunately there were no complaints.
Frank Schulakowski, expansion coordinator of Telekom in the Barnim district, thanked the municipalities involved and the citizens for trust during the project phase. He emphasized that this expansion not only brings technical improvements, but above all represents progress in the quality of life and opportunities for the region.
