Reliable gas supply in Austria: Customers are enthusiastic!
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - The reliability of the Austrian gas infrastructure has proven itself again in these challenging times. Despite the devastating floods in September 2024, the gas pipes remained stable. "The security of supply was guaranteed at any time," emphasizes Michael Mock, managing director of ÖVGW. A current survey by Marketmind below 1,800 household and commercial customers shows that customers consistently evaluate the services of the gas network operators positively. The network operators achieved an average rating of 1.32 on a scale from 1 to 5. The low disruption is particularly remarkable: in 2023, gas customers were only affected by unplanned interruptions. This reports the public relations work of the Austrian Association for the gas and water subject.
Green gas as a key to decarbonization
A study by Frontier Economics was presented in Berlin in parallel to these developments, which examines the role of gas infrastructure for an almost CO2-neutral energy system by 2050. The analysis shows that the combination of renewable electricity and existing gas networks not only reduce the system costs by around 12 billion euros annually, but also increase the acceptance of the energy transition. Green gas, such as biogas or synthetically produced gas, could therefore be a central component on the way to climate neutrality. So far, 14 percent of the respondents in Austria have already been supplied with green gas, which shows a positive trend towards sustainable energies. Despite the positive developments, 47 percent of those surveyed do not feel sufficiently informed about green gas, as the evaluation by the ÖVGW shows. The knowledge of these studies is of enormous importance with regard to future energy supply. While society is increasingly striving for environmental and climate protection, the gas infrastructure must continue to be seen as a reliable backbone of energy supply. As a connecting element between production and consumption, the gas infrastructure will play a major role in the energy transition of the future, as the Frontier study clearly shows.
