Christmas amnesty: 18 prisoners celebrate the festival in freedom!
This year, a selected group of detainees in Germany enjoys premature freedom for Christmas. A total of around 1,000 prisoners in different federal states, including Schleswig-Holstein, can be released from prison prematurely, as the German Press Agency (dpa) reports. In Schleswig-Holstein, where 18 inmates benefit from the so-called Christmas amnesty, the prisoners can be released under certain conditions. According to a declaration by the Ministry of Justice, they are generally granted for those imprisoned, whose detention period ends by January 6, 2025 at the latest. This practice has a long tradition and aims to facilitate integration into society to the prisoners, according to the authorities. You can read more about this on n-tv.de
particularly highlighted is North Rhine-Westphalia, where most of the prisoners are released prematurely. Here, 322 prisoners benefit from amnesty, which represents an increase compared to 291 in the previous year. In other federal states, prisoners are also on the list of pardon. In Berlin, 90 prisoners are expected to be released prematurely, while in Saxony there are opportunities for further layoffs until Christmas Eve. As the mopo apply, only prisoners who have not noticed in custody or are noticed due to less serious delicts can be from Christmas amnesties benefit.
The Christmas amnesty not only has the goal of enabling the detainees to celebrate a homely celebration, but also practical reasons. Justice Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) from Hessen emphasizes that the prisoners have access to advice centers and authorities during the holidays to facilitate their return to society. While the number of prisoners who came back this year, compared to the previous year, the early release remains a ray of hope for many in an otherwise cloudy time.
