Tempelhofer Feld: Five winning designs for the future of Berlin!

On the Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin it is bubbling! An exciting ideas competition is in the starting blocks and the tension is tangible. Beautier Christian Gaebler (SPD) burst the bomb on Friday morning: five equivalent winning designs are to emerge from the competition. The tender will be officially published next Wednesday, November 13th. Originally, a marginal development of the former airport area was planned, but a referendum in 2014 put it in. The competition is now being reissued as a "city and open space planning ideas competition", and the creativity of the participants is in demand.

The dialogue workshops made a clear vote in September: no border development! But Gaebler emphasizes that this is not a must for the competition participants. "It's a competition," said Gaebler. Nevertheless, government policy provides for the possibility of a careful margin to counteract the housing shortage. In the first phase of the competition, international Teams from urban planners, architects and landscape architects are called to submit their ideas. Creativity is in demand, but please no utopias - "we don't want tobogganing mountains," warns Gaebler.

tension in the jurisdiction

The jury will select about 20 designs that are to be deepened by summer. In July, the five winning designs will be presented to the dialogue workshops before they are presented to the public in September. There is a special feature at the jury: Instead of the usual administrative posts, the places are filled with participants in the dialogue workshops. Nevertheless, an administrative member, Petra Kahlfeldt, Senate Building Director, remains in the jury. What ultimately happens with the results remains unclear. Implementation of the designs is not guaranteed and a re -evaluation by the Berlin population could be crucial.

It remains questionable whether an edge development can actually alleviate the housing shortage. Gaebler dampens the expectations: "If, something will happen in the next decade and not in this decade." The Berliners can be excited to see which creative ideas the Tempelhofer Feld could lead to a new era.
