Honor for Dr. Eduard Levinstein: Schöneberg unveiled the plaque

On October 11, 2024, a solemn consecration took place in Belziger Straße 7 in the Schöneberg district of Schöne. District Mayor Jörn Oltmann took part in this significant event, which the doctor and entrepreneur Dr. Eduard Levinstein honors. The stele bears the name "Maison de Santé" and commemorates Levinstein's pioneering contributions to naturopathy. The decision to establish the plaque was made at the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district assembly and bears number 0172/XXI.

In his speech, Oltmann said that the plaque was not only dedicated to a remarkable individual, but also offers a way for the citizens to deal with the historical meaning of this place. "With the plaque for Dr. Eduard Levinstein and the Maison de Santé, we appreciate an important place in the district," said the mayor.

The meaning of Dr. Eduard Levinstein

Dr. Eduard Levinstein was a pioneer in naturopathy and founded the private clinic "Maison de Santé" on the current site of Schöneberger Hauptstraße 14-16 in 1861. This facility was not only a medical point of contact, but also revolutionized the treatment methods of that time. Through the use of naturopathic procedures as well as new technologies such as steam power and electricity, he created a new health concept that soon received attention beyond the borders of Berlin.

The "Maison de Santé" quickly became very important and was considered one of the first of its kind in Berlin. The buildings of the former spa and bathing establishment still preserved today are listed and are therefore not only architecturally, but also culturally of great importance for Schöneberg. These structural relics offer an extraordinary insight into the development of health care in Berlin in the 19th century.

The new plaque will not only keep the memory of Levinstein's performance awake, but will also promote public interest in the history of naturopathy and its development. The persistent importance of the healing methods initiated by Levinstein and the advantages of his clinic are still relevant for the understanding of alternative and complementary healing approaches.

In addition, the plaque contributes to the cultural identity of the district. It is a place where not only history is kept alive, but which can also serve as a platform for discourses on medical innovations and their historical roots. Such initiatives raise awareness of the diversity of medical traditions and the associated personalities.

The inauguration of this plaque is in accordance with the endeavors of the district administration, historical developments and important people in Schöneberg. Such projects not only promote dialogue through social values, but also the understanding of the medical history of Berlin and the European health concepts as a whole. The memory of Dr. Eduard Levinstein and his pioneering achievements in naturopathy is part of a larger narrative about progress, innovation and the development of health care.
