Died lonely: commemoration for 237 people in Lankwitz

Gallwitzallee 4-6, 12249 Berlin, Deutschland - On Saturday, November 23, 2024, a moving commemoration for the people from Steglitz-Zehlendorf, who died in loneliness, will take place at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony is held in the Trinity Church in Lankwitz, Gallwitzallee 4-6, 12249 Berlin. Every year, numerous people die unnoticed without relatives being found or rejecting responsibility for burial. In such cases, the department "regulatory burials" of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf health department takes care of the official burial.

Since the last funeral service on November 25, 2023, a total of 237 people died lonely from October 2023 to the end of September 2024. These tragic fates will be recognized in an emotional ceremony on November 23. During the celebration, the names of the deceased are read out, and the visitors: inside have the opportunity to put flowers or personal objects on the stages to the sanctuary. These flowers are then brought to the graves of the deceased by the organizers.

Community commemoration

The commemoration is organized on behalf of the district council (BVV) by the Steglitz-Zehlendorf Health Department as well as the Diakonisches Werk Steglitz and Teltow-Zehlendorf e.V. Different beliefs and the humanistic association are also integrated into the event in order to enable respectful and common commemoration. This ceremony offers a space for grief and memory, regardless of denominational ties.
