Flags against violence: Spandau sets a strong sign for women!

spandau. A shocking sign against violence is set! The town hall Spandau has the flags and draws attention to the alarming reality: every second woman in Germany is affected!

The shocking numbers speak volumes: by November 2024, 29 women have already been murdered in Berlin, while throughout 2023 35 tried and were registered with complete murders on all sexes. This worrying development caused the Spandau district to raise the flag against violence to women on Monday, November 18, at 12 noon. Prof. Dr. Ulrike Lembke, a judge at the Berlin Constitutional Court, said in front of the town hall: "Violence against women is a serious violation of human rights. She violates the UN woman's disposition and the Istanbul Convention."

alarming statistics and shocking incidents

The recent incidents in Berlin are shocking: in Marzahn, a young woman and her two small children were brutally killed by the partner. In Zehlendorf and Lichtenberg, women fell victim to their ex-partners just because they had loosened from the relationship. Nationwide, a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner every two days! "There is no freedom without freedom of violence," emphasizes Lembke, pointing out the serious social and economic consequences: "Every second woman in Germany is affected by sexual harassment." It is particularly alarming that only one of a hundred rapes in Germany is actually convicted!

In order to meet the acute need for support, the Eulalia Equinity Association opens a specialist advice and intervention center in Spandau on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The resources in Berlin are terrifyingly inadequate, and there is a lack of specific offers for women who suffer from sexual violence, forced marriages or forced prostitution. Another serious problem is the lack of affordable living space that holds many women in violent relationships. Despite the ratification of the Istanbul Convention six years ago, there is still no national strategy to combat violence against women in Germany.

The flags in front of the town hall Spandau will blow longer than usual this year - as a warning symbol and call to act against a social problem that affects all of us!
