The incidents have triggered a broad discussion about a general ban on firecrackers in Germany. Interior Senator Iris Spranger has clearly spoken out for such a ban, but with exceptions to certain defined places, so -called pyro license zones. Berlin's Government Mayor Kai Wegner, on the other hand, expressed doubts about the implementation of a full fireplace ban.
The problem around ball bombs and their dangers is not new. As ZDF reported, these pyrotechnic products are subject to strict legal provisions in Germany. They fall under the explosive law of category F4 (large fireworks) and their use is only permitted by experts with the appropriate permission. The acquisition and commitment by private individuals are prohibited and they are not available on free trade.
