Broadcasting contribution remains stable: Country chief decision ensures turmoil!

In the recent prime ministerial conference in Berlin, it was decided that the broadcasting contribution will not be increased for the time being. The heads of the federal states agreed that the monthly contribution of currently 18.36 euros remains stable in 2025 and 2026. This announced Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), and Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) also confirmed the decision after intensive discussions among the countries. Before that, there were considerations to increase the contribution by 58 cents to 18.94 euros, but these plans are initially off the table, such as Merkur reported.

Federal Constitutional Court decides on increase

In the meantime, the question of the future amount of the broadcasting contribution is at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. ARD and ZDF submitted constitutional complaints in November to enforce an increase in the contribution. It is still unclear when and how the court will decide what affects the financial planning of the public broadcaster. Several federal states have asked the media to withdraw their lawsuit, but this was rejected by the transmitters, such as the reported.

In addition to this decision, the prime ministers planned changes to the procedural model for the determination of the broadcasting contribution. The aim is to establish a simpler adaptation process, especially for low premium increases. These innovations can be seen in the context of ongoing discussions about the reform of public service broadcasting. Obviously, the question arises whether the broadcasters show the necessary will to reform to regain the trust of the public after the latest scandals like the RBB scandal have provided uncertainty.
