New elections in Germany: Scholz 'coalition breaks, who is coming now?

The elections in Germany are just around the corner, and the political landscape is in turmoil!

Berlin, Germany - The political stage in Germany is shaken by a dramatic upheaval! After the collapse of the traffic light coalition under Chancellor Olaf Scholz on November 6th, when he dismissed his finance minister Christian Lindner from the FDP, the citizens faced an early election. On February 23, 2024, the fate of the nation will be decided, while Scholz scheduled a vote on the trust on December 16

The traffic light coalition, which was launched in 2021, was a shaky construct right from the start. The FDP, known for its strict austerity measures, could not agree with the more social views of the SPD and the Greens. The dispute over the budget in 2025 finally led to escalation when Scholz called for a suspension of the debt brake, while Lindner demanded massive savings and a withdrawal of climate goals. According to reports, the FDP is said to have intentionally provoked the break of the coalition to bring about new elections - a reproach that the party vehemently denies.

Who leads the surveys?

In the middle of this chaos, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is ahead! According to a current INSA survey, the CDU is clearly ahead of the traffic light coalition with 32 percent. Friedrich Merz, who has led the party to the right since 2022, could become the next chancellor. He plans to turn back the reforms of the traffic light, reduce taxes and to secure the borders. Merz calls for a fundamental course correction in migration, security and economic policy.

But the AfD also mixes vigorously! With 20 percent in the surveys, the right -wing extremist party could achieve a historical result. Despite the warnings of the German secret services that some of their national associations are extremist, the rise of the AfD remains unbroken. While the FDP and the Left Party are below the 5 percent hurdle, the newly founded Sahra Wagenknecht Allianz has already reached 7 percent.

The upcoming elections are not only a test for the parties, but also for the German economy! The uncertainties by the Ukraine conflict and possible new US tariffs threaten to further burden the economy that has already been. Political decision -makers are faced with the challenge of reforming the debt brake in order to enable urgently needed investments. Time is pushing and the voters are excited to see who can deliver the right answers!
