New legal obligation: How to really dispose of old textiles in Berlin!

From January 1, 2025, a legal separation of separation for old textiles in Germany. This regulation is based on the EU waste framework directive and the district administration law (KRWG). The aim of this measure is to promote reuse and the recycling of textiles in order to reduce the proportion of usable old textiles in residual waste. The detection rate of old textiles in Germany is currently around 64 %. Over 90 % of the textiles recorded are reused or recycled, as the Landratsamt Pirna reports.

private individuals and commercial waste producers are obliged from the above date to dispose of old textiles separately from the residual waste. There are already non -profit and commercial disposal channels, such as collection containers and clothing chambers. The ZAOE offers withdrawal offers for old textiles at its recycling centers. No significant increase in old textile volume is expected, since most citizens already use old clothing containers in the municipalities. Controls of the residual waste containers are not planned. Clean and dry clothing, tablecloths, bed linen, curtains and bundled shoes are suitable for the collection, while heavily dirty, moist or damaged textiles must not be disposed of.

disposal options in Berlin

The Berlin city cleaning (BSR) has provided comprehensive information on the new regulation and provides tips on the disposal of old textiles. From the cut -off date, several options for submitting old textiles are available in Berlin. There are 14 BSR recycling courtyards that offer old clothing containers for the fee-free delivery of clean and dry textiles and shoes. Split or dirty textiles are subject to a fee.

The most important disposal options are listed here:

  • Recyclinghöfe: 14 BSR recycling courtyards with old clothing containers
  • still: Usedware resort of the BSR for donations and purchase of second-hand articles
  • neighborhood days/bulky waste collection: Submission of clean old textiles
  • non -profit and commercial collecting containers: Numerous containers in the public street land

It is important that only usable, clean and dry clothing as well as tied shoes belong to the old clothing containers. Crushed, dirty or contaminated textiles must be disposed of in the residual waste bin. The BSR works with sorting companies and textile recerators to process and re-explain the collected textiles, as on the website of the Berliner City cleaning is executed .

Statistically speaking, around 31,500 tons of old textiles end up in Berlin in Berlin, which corresponds to 8.6 kg per person (as of 2018). The new separation collection obligation is intended to help use the resources more efficiently and to relieve the environment.
