Viennese subway in transition: Large construction sites and innovations 2025!
The Viennese lines are faced with a master plan to modernize and renew the subway infrastructure, which has been in full swing since January 2025. This works on the Alserbach Bridge, a historic building from the time of Otto Wagner, which has experienced many changes in the past 125 years. Since the beginning of the renovation work in the previous year, the train connection to Heiligenstadt had been restricted because only every second train was able to run. This situation continued from mid-January to the end of February when the second track was renewed, but without restrictions for subway traffic in the other directions, such as reported.
Numerous modernizations and the exchange of subway switches are planned in the coming months. The U1 and U4 affect concrete work, whereby special importance is placed on further renovations on the signal boxes and ward buildings. From February to the end of June, the subway on the route in Kagran will run without a stop, since the platform is modernized here. In the area between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke, drastic restrictions on the U4 are still to be expected, while the Viennese lines with line E4 are offered to compensate for the detour, reported Wiener Linien .
long-term investments in the subway
2025 also includes the extensive investment program to renew and install modern escalators, which is rated with a total of 6.3 million euros. The focus is particularly on the stations of the U6, which will receive further new course during the semester break and in autumn. The clearly formulated goal is to improve the entire subway experience for passengers and to significantly increase accessibility, so that people with walking disabilities or older people can also use public transport carefree.
