Election quake in Iceland: Social Democrats head for change of government!
Reykjavik, Island - The political landscape in Iceland is facing a turning point. In the latest elections, which took place on December 1, 2024, the Social Democrats, according to reports from the radio station, lead with about 22.6 percent of the vote, followed by the independence party of the Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson with 21.6 percent. The current government coalition, consisting of progress party and left-green movement, suffers massive losses, while the left-green green may even fly out of parliament. The elections were brought forward after the coalition's three parties broke due to internal conflicts in mid -October 2024.

The preliminary results indicate a drastic change of government. Frostadóttir, the leader of the Social Democrats, emphasized at the election party in Reykjavik that a strong need for change in the country was obvious.
