Russian troops move near Sumy in North Ukraine
Russian troops set their advance in the Northern Ukrainian region Sumy Fort, whereby the capital of the region for its drones and Artillery has been within reach, as Ukrainian officials and analysts report.
Current situation in Sumy
A spokesman for the Ukrainian military in the region, Ivan Shevtsov, said that the Russian armed forces were constantly trying to move towards the city of Sumy. At the same time, there are increasing evacuations of civilians because the region is constantly being shot at.
military progress of the Russians
"The enemy currently occupied about 15 kilometers along the front line and about 6-7 kilometers into the depth of the area," said Shevtsov. He added that the Russians aimed to approach the city of Yunakivka, which is only a few kilometers away from their positions.
weapons attacks and their consequences
The military administration of Sumy reported that Russian troops have carried out almost 150 shot attacks on 47 settlements in the region in the past 24 hours.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its forces had conquered the village of Andriivka to expand the front, reported the official news agency TASS.
danger to the civilian population
Shevtsov warned that with another advance the Russians would be able to start coordinated attacks on the city of Sumy. The current population of the city is unknown before the war started, around 250,000 people lived there.
Overview of the front lines
The unofficial Ukrainian group Deepstate, which monitors the front lines, reported that Russian troops had occupied another settlement in northern Sumy, which means that they are about 20 kilometers from the city of Sumy.
Deepstate stated: "The situation in the north of the Sumy region continues to deteriorate due to the constant attacks by the enemy and a large number of infantry." They also warned that the threat of the enemy's advance means that it could penetrate a range of 20 to 25 kilometers, which would enable the use of FPV drones in the city of Sumy.
Missing resources
In addition, Ukrainian troops are unable to combat the use of fiber -optical drones of the Russians that can deal with interference measures. "A separate problem is the lack of personnel to hold back the enemy, which is serious," added Deepstate.
Russian reinforcement and military strategy
In the past few weeks, the Russians have strengthened their units in the region. According to the Institute for War Studies (ISW), this happened after President Vladimir Putin visited the adjacent Russian region of Kursk in mid -May and ordered the creation of a buffer zone within Sumy.
President Wolodymyr Selenskyj warned last month that Russia had gathered more than 50,000 troops near the Sumy region. In the meantime, the Ukrainian armed forces are challenged on several front sections, from the northern border to the Black Sea.
effects of attacks on the civilian population
ISW reported on Monday that the Russian armed forces recently intensified their ground attacks and had mobilized several experienced brigades, including air landing forces. Selenskyj described the northern region of Sumy as one of the "hottest" parts of the front line.
resistance and defense of Ukraine
Although taking the regional capital Sumy will probably be difficult for the Russians, since the terrain is heavily forested, their attacks can prevent the Ukrainian armed forces from being redirected according to Donetsk and other front sections.
ISW found that "Russian armed forces have not been able to take a Ukrainian city with a population of more than 100,000 existing before the war". Therefore, the situation remains tense and dangerous for both the Ukrainian defense and for the civilian population.
