New deposit system in Austria: This is how the bottles are returned!
Österreich - On January 1, 2025, a new disposable deposit system came into force in Austria, which is applied to plastic bottles and aluminum roses with a filling volume of 0.1 to 3 liters. Buyers of these packaging now have to pay 25 cents more at the cash register - with a six -man application, 1.50 euros quickly result. The aim of the system is to promote more sustainable use of resources and to bring about 2.2 billion bottles and doses to recycling every year, as "Today" reports. A return rate of 90 percent is to be reached by 2027.
So far, however, it can be seen that only a small part of the cups and bottles are actually returned. At the end of February, around 100 million deposit bottles and doses were sold in the first few months, but only more than ten million of them found their way back to the recycling cycle. "It is an important problem because every fifth product ends up in the trash," explains Monika Fiala from "Recycling Pfand Austria". By mid -March, the response rate could at least partially be improved, with over twelve million contained containers.relevant requirements for return
When returning, some specifications must be observed to get the deposit back: bottles and cans must be placed in an undeniable, empty and returned with a readable label. "The return takes place in many sales outlets, be it in supermarkets, bakeries or drugstores, either through machines or manually," explains "Recycling Pfand Austria". However, the exceptions are clearly defined: food suppliers and some restaurants do not take the empties back.
The new deposit system meets a positive response among the population. According to a survey, 80 percent of Austrians support this measure. Despite the initial difficulties, it is hoped that the return numbers will increase over time and that one will get closer to the target of 90 percent return rate by 2027. "Recycling Pfand Austria" is responsible for the implementation of this Ordinance, and it remains exciting to observe whether you can achieve the goals set.
