Lichtenberg's town hall: SPD demands radical removal of the swastika!

Möllendorffstraße 6, 10367 Berlin, Deutschland - In the heart of Lichtenberg it is bubbling: The historic town hall, which was built in 1898 as a neo -Gothic masterpiece, is now the focus of heated debates! A swastika that is emblazoned above the entrance area causes excitement and challenges politics. The SPD parliamentary group has submitted an application to completely repay this "inheritance from a dark past"!

"For people who are informed about the swastika, it is still recognizable," says the application, which is now to be discussed in the district council. The SPD not only requires the complete removal of the swastika, but also a redesign of the wrought iron grid to eliminate any traces. In addition, an information board is to be attached to the town hall, which indicates the dark history of this symbolism. A clear step in the right direction for more diversity in Lichtenberg!

a monument with history

But the thing is complicated! The Lichtenberg town hall is under monument protection, and every change is a hot iron. Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) emphasizes the responsibility to deal sensitively with the eventful history of the building. Despite the structural changes, the swastika remains recognizable for connoisseurs. "We have to respect the history of the house," says Schaefer, while the district assembly is ready to decide on the application in the democratic process.

The town hall was already listed on September 21, 1977. Why the swastika was not removed at the time remains a mystery. "Unfortunately, after almost 50 years, we cannot say why the decision -makers at that time remained idle in the GDR," explains the mayor. The discussion has opened and the citizens of Lichtenberg look forward to the upcoming decisions!
