Customers flock to the Mall of Berlin - but the shops remain empty!

The Mall of Berlin in the Mitte district, one of the best -known shopping centers in the city, is criticized. Despite the initial popularity, the mall increasingly attracts fewer visitors and several shops have already closed. One visitor summarized his observations on Reddit and found that the mall had an empty one from week to week, which he indicated as an indication of a possible recession or specific problems of the shopping center. This concern was found in the comments of other users who noticed similar developments and speculated about the reasons for the closures, such as the general extinction of shopping centers and the lack of attractiveness of some shops.

In contrast, some Reddit users reported on full business, especially in the run-up to Christmas. The crowd of visitors seems to fluctuate on different days, but the empty shops cannot be overlooked. According to Berlin Live , more than ten shops are already closed, including known branches such as "Feinkost Kropp" and "Nordsee".

Current developments in the mall

Tagesspiegel experienced the mall with 270 shops, but the number of visitors has been decreased since then, especially on sales. Friday afternoon and Saturday. It remains lively in the so -called food courts, while other areas of weaker are frequented.

dealers report little customer interest outside Saturday, and at least a dozen shops are empty. Some operators have already started to close their branches, but were at least temporarily agreed to remain in the mall. Despite all the challenges, the investor company HGHI claims that more than ten million visitors have been counted in the Mall since the opening, whereby the vacancy is considered not serious compared to the total number of business.

The Berlin-Brandenburg trade association regards the development as normal and sees the typical difficulties that new centers bring with it. Retail expert Christoph Meyer also emphasizes that the industry often needs a longer start -up time for new shopping centers to become profitable.
