Karl-Marx statue in Neubrandenburg: Back in the workshop!
Neubrandenburg, Deutschland - In Neubrandenburg, the famous Karl Marx statue, which once adorned the Schwanenteich, is no longer in its place. It was dismantled due to repeated vandalism attacks and transported to Berlin for repair in a special workshop. The right arm of the bronze sculpture has been separated for the third time in 2022, which forces the city to make a costly repair process. The estimated costs for the repair are around 2,000 euros, such as ndr.de
The original work of art, created by sculptor Gerhard Thieme, was set up in 1969 and reflects the history and controversy around the GDR. After an intensive debate, the monument was set up again in 2018, but it has not been spared by vandalism since then. As soon as the monument had celebrated its reorganization in spring 2022, it was damaged for the first time. In the following spring there was another incident in which the arm was separated again. This has meanwhile brought a new dimension of vandalism to works of art in public space, such as nordkurier.de
repairs and costs
The statue is repaired in the Berlin picture foundry Seiler, where an increased interior construction is installed to prevent future damage. The budget for repairing the arm is 1,300 euros and this time is contested from the urban budget. The first repair was necessary for the first repair, which can now be used again. The hope of the city administration is that the increased construction offers stability that withstands other vandalism files.
