Karin Baal: Berlin mourns the loss of the legend of post -war theaters
The German Schauzelgend Karin Baal died in Berlin at the age of 84! Her children, Therese Lohner and Thomas Baal, told the German Press Agency that she died on Tuesday, in the city that she loved so much. "She has shaped a generation and will remain unforgettable. She tears a huge hole - not only in our family, but in Berlin and all of Germany," said the moving words of her children.
Karin Baal was famous in the 1950s with the film "The Halfstark", which addressed the life of young people in post-war Berlin. As a teenager, she took over the leading role of the Sissy and quickly became the icon of German cinema, celebrated as the German answer to Brigitte Bardot. The black and white film became a classic and catapulted Baal in the hearts of the audience.
Various roles and awards
After her breakthrough, numerous appearances in films and series followed, including "The girl Rosemarie", "We Kellkinder" and the legendary Edgar Wallace films. She was also seen in Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Berlin Alexanderplatz". Their versatility meant that they appeared in popular TV series such as "Darling Kreuzberg" and "Black Forest Clinic" as well as in crime novels like the "crime scene".
In 2018 Baal was awarded the Götz George Prize for her life's work. The foundation praised her as a "great actress and admirable woman", who brought her characters alive with touching devotion. Despite health challenges, Baal lived in her beloved Charlottenburg until the end, where she always felt connected to her hometown. Her daughter Therese emphasized: "She absolutely wanted to stay in Berlin."
