Dog Gigi survives spectacular falls at an eight meter deep shaft!

On Saturday, January 6, 2025, a dog named Gigi in Kassel fell into an eight meter deep water shaft. The incident occurred in the Süsterfeld-Hellenböhn district around 12:15 p.m. Gigi, a little Maltese mixed, was with the family of Julia Voge, who was about to go back to Berlin when the dog fell into the shaft. He was distracted because he watched birds in an aviary. The shaft was open because another tenant checked the water level.

Julia Voge was in the city center at the time and was informed by her daughter, who alarmed the fire brigade. The emergency services initially tried to save Gigi with a ladder, but found that the shaft was too narrow. Thereupon a height rescuer was drained down into the shaft with a rope. At around 2 p.m. Gigi was finally saved from the shaft. He was wrapped in a towel and, although exhausted, he was unharmed. Julia Voge leads this back to his low weight and maneuverability.

rescue by height rescuers

Already on January 4, 2025, the control center alerted the fire brigade to an animal rescue. A dog had also fallen into a drainage shaft that was about 8 meters deep. At that time it turned out that the dog was obviously not seriously injured. Rescue attempts with a fire department failed due to the narrow width of the shaft. As a result, height rescuers were requested, a special unit of the fire brigade with specific equipment and training for rescue operations from heights and depths.

The height rescuers from the city and district of Kassel built a security system. A height rescuer was abandoned on ropes into the shaft to secure the dog and finally bring it up. After the rescue, the dog was handed over to the lucky owner, which made it easier for both the emergency services and those present, such as Kassel supplemented.
