Hate against Queere: Berlin reports a new record for acts of violence!
In Berlin, the alarm raises: The number of queer -hostile crimes has reached a new high. According to Berlin's social senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD), there were a total of 588 documented incidents in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 21 percent compared to the previous year. The violence, which was registered in 127 cases, is particularly worrying, which, despite the previous maximum value of 148 in 2022, signals a still high level, such as the Tagesspiegel reported.
increase in hate crimes
The most frequently reported offenses were insults that made up for 45.4 percent of the incidents. Bodily harm extended to 21 percent, followed by seditions with 7.1 percent. The majority of these aggression occurs in public space, with 92.4 percent of the suspects being male and often comes from the middle age group. This is shown by a report by the Camino Scientific Institute, which works on behalf of the Berlin State Office for Equal Treatment, and was also confirmed by Tageschau . The awareness of this problem is essential.
new campaign against queer hostility
To help the victims and to counteract such brutal attacks, Kiziltepe presented a new campaign that is aimed at the users of local public transport. The slogan "You only have 48 hours - sleep no night over" should encourage it to report attacks quickly, since video recordings for perpetrator identification are only saved for 48 hours. According to Berlin's queer commissioner Alfonso Pantisano, any ad can be decisive to prevent the repetition of such acts.
