German investigators illuminate cruel war crimes in Ukraine

Kiew, Ukraine - The investigation into possible war crimes in the Ukraine conflict have achieved a new dimension in Germany. According to the report of the Federal Government are available to the German law enforcement authorities over 700 information on possible war crimes, including serious Allegations such as torture, intentional killings and sexual violence. Attorney General Jens Rommel has initiated a structural investigation procedure in order to identify concrete deeds and those responsible for these crimes. In this context, more than 200 witnesses have already been heard, and the investigation is carried out in cooperation with the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Federal Intelligence Service and International Partners. The traffic light coalition in Berlin requires a consistent conviction of perpetrators to represent the principles of justice and to bring the global public to the full truth about war crimes.

International dimension of the investigation

In March 2022, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights documented numerous attacks by Russia on civilian institutions that illustrate the suffering of the Ukrainian civilian population. Reports on systematic war crimes that were committed by the Russian Army during previous conflicts such as in Chechnya, Georgia and Syria show that such offenses in this conflict are not the exception, but the rule, but the rule, as was found in an analysis . The acts range from targeted attacks on hospitals, schools and civilian infrastructures to the use of torture against prisoners of war. The use of chemical weapons and other forms of violence are also documented. The reports of the disappearance of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children who were victims of the systematic deportation of Russian armed forces meet the criteria for human rights violations under international law.

In this context, the Federal Criminal Police Office, led by BKA President Holger Münch, defined clear goals: by recording and analyzing evidence, perpetrators should be put on trial. The pressure on Russian leadership is growing because the international community emphasizes the need for a transparent and fair procedure. In order to illustrate the dimension of the crimes, the terrifying numbers are pointed out: more than 20,000 children are reported as missing, many of them were deported to Russia. According to Unicef, the concern for the fates of these children is still great. The complexity of the legal situation and international cooperation turns out to be a decisive factor for the upcoming investigation.
