Deutsche Bahn increases sprinter connections: 12 trains to Frankfurt every day!
Deutsche Bahn will significantly increase the number of sprinter connections between Berlin and Frankfurt am Main from December 15th. This is done as part of the next timetable change, and three additional trains are offered per direction every day. With this measure, the Deutsche Bahn almost goes to the level of Lufthansa in terms of frequency.
The aviation group currently offers twelve flights between these two cities every day. The railway, on the other hand, plans to expand its connections to a total of eleven, including the regular ICE trains. According to the train, the increasing demand for sprinter connections has increased enormously in recent years, with an increase of 70 percent from 2019 to 2024.
international traffic and new trains
The adjustment of the connections will also affect international routes. For example, the connection from Munich to Zurich is expanded with the cooperation between Deutsche Bahn and the SBB. From the timetable change, the number of daily trips is increased from seven to eight. The journey takes about three hours and 25 minutes, but is still pending.
In addition, a new ICE 3 NEO between Berlin and Paris is introduced, which runs via Frankfurt am Main, but does not serve as an airport feeder because it only stops at the Südbahnhof. Travelers have to expect a significantly longer travel time of around eight hours.
In contrast, Deutsche Bahn also plans to rejuvenate its night train offer by introducing a new night-time from Berlin to Zurich, which, however, only offers seats. In Berlin, improvements in the connection through more frequent holding at the Zoological Garden train station are intended, which could potentially save up to 20 minutes of travel time. From May 2025, however, there will also be a significant change in the connection to Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which for an unknown time is a long -distance traffic. The IC line between Rostock and the cities of Dresden and Chemnitz will no longer start the train station, which is due to ongoing construction work.
new Kiss trains for Leipzig/Halle
With regard to the connection between Dresden and Halle, there is also news. From summer 2025, Deutsche Bahn will use faster IC trains: Instead of the previous IC2 sets at a speed of 160 km/h, IC2 druggings from Stadler (KISS) come into play, which can reach up to 200 km/h. The travel times themselves will not change, but the higher speed should serve as a punctuality buffer.
Despite the technical improvements, this section between Halle and Leipzig will have relatively short speed rides. The trains are quite strong in acceleration, which is due to its original construction for S-Bahn use. Deutsche Bahn plans to operate about half of the IC connections on this line with the new KISS trains.
The new trains will be available in the Deutsche Bahn booking system from October 16, 2024. Interested travelers can look forward to an early sales start for the new tickets. In the long run, it should also be possible to book inner -German train tickets up to twelve months in advance, which could give the railway an advantage in the competition with airlines.
The decision to increase the frequencies and introduce new offers comes at a time when the competition between train and aircraft has become more intense for domestic German routes, and could help increase the attractiveness of the railway as a travel material.
