CDU strokes 29-euro ticket: Berlin has to bleed for savings package!

Berlin, Deutschland - Berlin - A shock for the Berliners! The popular 29-euro ticket will be deleted in the coming year! Only a few months after its introduction in July, the CDU prevailed and prices for public transport will increase. This happened in the run-up to a crucial savings round, in which the CDU and SPD agreed to save 300 million euros to put a 3-billion euro savings package.

A bitter setback for the Social Democrats, who had carried the ticket to the election campaign with her former top candidate Franziska Giffey (46, SPD) as a central election promise. Around 200,000 Berliners currently use the 29-euro ticket for trips with the BVG, S-Bahn and Regio. Pensioners and families in particular appreciated the opportunity to take a child and a dog with them for free. The contract was created for at least twelve months and was an expensive obligation for the state of Berlin, with 300 million euros that were planned for 2024 in the budget.

price increase for the social ticket

But that's not all! The social ticket is preserved, but the price is more than doubled from 9 to 19 euros! This drastic increase was prevented by the SPD, which could avert an even higher increase to 29 euros. The free student ticket also remains, but the increase in the social ticket will hit many Berliners hard.

The fronts between the parties were clear: While the SPD was aiming for an increase in the monthly subscription to 39 euros, the CDU simply wanted to let the contracts expire. The decision to delete the 29-euro ticket shows how serious the financial situation in Berlin is and what effects this will have on the mobility of the citizens.
