Berlin saves radical: 29-euro ticket falls-what does that mean for you?
Berlin. A dramatic cut for the capital: The 29-euro ticket is history! Berlin is facing a financial upheaval and the black and red coalition has decided where the health insurers are shortened. The savings are not only painful, they are also far -reaching!
On Monday evening, Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and the top politicians of the CDU and SPD in the Red City Hall gathered to clarify the last details for the 2025 budget. Economic Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) proudly announced: "We are done". But the joy did not last long, because the savings amount to shocking 350 million euros, which brings the total cuts to almost 2.7 billion euros. Wegner spoke of "painful cuts" that the citizens will feel.
The 29-euro ticket falls!
The abolition of the popular 29-euro ticket for public transport will save around 100 million euros for 2025. It was not until July 2024 that this ticket was a glimmer of hope for many Berliners who wanted inexpensive mobility. Giffey, who has campaigned for the ticket until the end, suffers a political defeat that could be expensive. The coalition also plans to save another 30 million euros in the transport sector, which makes the situation even more uncertain for passengers.
The effects are still unclear: What happens to the customers who have completed an annual subscription to the 29-euro ticket from December 1st? The uncertainty hovers over the capital, while the coalition also plans drastic savings in other areas. A total of 660 million euros are to be reduced in the areas of traffic, environment and climate protection. The daycare expansion is also circumcised with 4 million euros. The city tax on hotel accommodation increases to 7.5 percent, which is intended to rinse an additional 27 million in the coffers. The Berlin water operations should contribute another 50 million from their profits. The austerity measures are comprehensive and affect almost all areas of life of the Berliners.
