Berlin, Berlin: Malente as a backdrop for the start of the series!

The cult series "Berlin, Berlin" celebrated its beginning in 2002 and has since developed into a popular piece of German television history. The plot follows the 18-year-old Lolle, who wants to move from her home village of Malente to the big city of Berlin after graduating from high school. The first episode of the series plays in the schoolaula of the fictional Theodor Fontane Gymnasium Malente. It should be noted that there is no real theodor fontane high school in this region.

In the first episode, Lolle says goodbye to her friend Tom, who also wants to go to Berlin. Tom commutes by bus between Neu-Travemünde, Scharbeutz, Malente, Plön, Preetz and Kiel. After the two separated, Lolle follows Tom to Berlin. A total of four seasons of the remarkable series were produced. A film for the series was published in 2020, but due to the pandemic not in cinemas, but on Netflix, as the Unlapped Exped.

Fontane moved in Berlin and dealt with the city and its development. His literary contributions and reviews have significantly influenced the culture and the literary heritage of Berlin to this day. In his honor, various cultural projects and memorations for the 200th birthday in 2019 were carried out. In addition, a “Fontane-Weg” in Berlin is reminiscent of important places of his life and work.
