Alarming condition: Three of four rivers in Brandenburg are sick!

Hirtengraben, Potsdam, Deutschland - A frightening inventory of German rivers shows that many streams and rivers are in a worrying state. The current research by ARD and Correctiv reveals that over a third of the waters examined in Brandenburg had to be classified as poor. In Berlin it looks even darker: almost half of the observed water suffers from a critical ecological state.

The participation campaign #our inflanting, in which citizens were to document the condition of their domestic waters, has delivered alarming results. These are now rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with many standing and flowing water in Germany only received four and five. This means that a large number of these waters are at risk.

habitat qualities under the magnifying glass

In Brandenburg, 20 out of 53 water -observed places have shown a poor quality of habitat. A concrete example of this is the shepherd trench in the southeast of Potsdam. According to researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen, this highly changed water run is affected by a lack of water, which means that the biodiversity is severely restricted. The examination also shows the presence of invasive species such as the Mediterranean water breed, which mostly prefer such environmental. Further alarming data were also found in other areas such as Karstädt and Neuhausen, where the oceanographic reviews were consistently negative.

The situation is similar in Berlin: Here, 16 out of 37 tested rivers and streams did not pass the test with the predicate "badly". Scientists from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research and the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research have evaluated the over 2,700 entries that have come from all 16 federal states

a worrying nationwide result

For better documentation of the water, adults and children had developed balanced checklists to clarify questions like: is the water clear? Does it smell uncomfortable? Is the stream straightened? Such questions were raised in the ARD-Matinee under the direction of daily topics Jessy Wellmer to sharpen public awareness.

The results of the extensive campaign are in the ARD story "Our rivers-how do we save Germany's lifeline?" presented. This will be sent on Monday from eight o'clock in the ARD Mediathek and in Primetime in the first.
