The demolition of the Jahnstadion stopped: Sparrow saves the sports park!

Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark, 10405 Berlin, Deutschland - The demolition of the Jahnstadion in Berlin is on the brink! The Berlin Administrative Court has granted an urgent request from a nature conservation association and initially stopped the demolition of the Jahn sports park that has already started. Reason for this dramatic turn? The well -being of the brooding house sparrows! These small but worth protecting birds now have the fate of an entire sports area in hand.

In an official announcement, the court said that certain buildings on the stadium site must not be demolished because they accommodate breeding sites for the house sparrows. Among other things, the eastern grandstand building, the western counter grandstand and the sanitary buildings in the north and south are affected. The court expressed significant doubts that the planned compensation measures - the construction of new sparrow houses - can adequately compensate for the loss of 94 breeding sites. This ban remains in force until February 28, 2025 and brings the renovation plans of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn sports park.

conversion plans in danger

The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Prenzlauer Berg should be extensively redesigned in the coming years. The demolition of the old stadium was planned to make room for a modern sports center, which is intended to include additional football, beach volleyball and tennis courts as well as a multisport hall and a meeting center. But now those responsible have to rethink and possibly revise their plans in order to meet the legal requirements for the protection of the house sparrows.
