Angry Starnberger: 52 ways closed in winter - city under pressure!
Starnberg, Deutschland - In Starnberg, the anger is bubbling! The city recently has 52 non-public and limited public ways for the winter months, and the citizens are anything but enthusiastic. The paths will not be cleared from November 2024 to March 2025, which has led to a storm of indignation among residents. The decision to close the paths was made in spring 2024 for liability reasons after residents refused to ensure the evacuation and scatter.
Mayor Patrick Janik said that the city did not want to pass responsibility to the citizens. External service providers had caused high costs of 60,000 to 70,000 euros in the past. However, the city cannot simply pull itself out of responsibility with a sign "Use at your own risk". In the event of an accident on the slippery paths, the city remains liable, which made the decision to block the closure all the more urgent.
citizens demand solutions
The reactions of the citizens are violent! Many feel patronized and now have to accept dangerous detours or switch to the car to get their daily jobs. Some ignore the closures and risk to put themselves in danger. Letters to the editor require more personal responsibility and suggest to use asylum seekers for winter service. The city plans to discuss the topic again in one of the next city council meetings in order to find a solution that meets the needs of citizens.
