A new milestone for the city of Schwienfurt: The empty Galeria-Kaufhof building, which has been unused since mid-January 2024, has finally found a buyer. According to the city, the building is taken over by the Duisburg project development company "Focus Development". The plans provide to tear the existing building and the adjacent parking garage largely. Instead of these structures, three new buildings are to be built.

The vision for the new construction projects combines various uses. There are living spaces, office space and a hotel. A small area is also reserved for retail. The rental agreement for the Galeria-Kaufhof building officially ended on January 31, 2024 after the department store had closed its doors after almost 60 years on January 17, 2024. Around 80 employees were still working in the shop during the closure. The decision to close the department store in Schweinfurt was already made in mid -March 2023 when Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof decided to close a total of ten department stores in Bavaria, including the branch in this city. The closure of the department store also represents a significant change for retail in Lower Franconia, where only branches remain in Würzburg and Aschaffenburg.

The department store has a long history: It was opened by Horten AG on October 29, 1964 and at that time employed around 600 employees. In 1996 the department store became part of the Kaufhof group.
