Italy creates new refugee camps in Albania: migrants on the way!
Italy began the controversial shift of migrants in refugee centers in Albania, which is of great international interest. After constant delays had slowed down the process, a naval ship has now been commissioned to bring a first group of migrants into the newly established camps. The arrival of the first 16 men from Egypt and Bangladesh is expected on Wednesday, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, which specifies that these migrants were previously taken up by Italian authorities during their dangerous striking over the central Mediterranean.
The Agreement that Italy and Albania signed last year aims to process asylum applications exteratorial. In other words, the Italian authorities want to carry out the examination of asylum applications in a non-EU state in order to relieve their own asylum policy. Italy plans to check applications in the quick procedure, whereby negative decisions will result in immediate return of the applicants from Albania.
The processes in the camps
The new camps are located at the Adriatic Hall Shengjin and in the Albanian town of Gjader. The camp of the camp officially started on Friday, although the opening was already planned for May. These delays had caused technical problems. An important aspect of this model is the forwarding of asylum seekers who come from countries of origin, which are classified as safe by the Italian authorities. Before the transfer to Albania, a first review of the migrants on board the ship is carried out.
However, there are exceptions; Women, children, sick people and victims of torture are excluded from this regulation. The discussion about this procedure has also caused a sensation in the European Community. Other European governments in particular look closely at the developments in Italy.
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) has stated that she finds the Italian model "interesting". The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is also optimistic that the experiences that Italy gains can draw practical teachings. The entire project increasingly attracts attention and is in the context of the broader discussion about migration and asylum in Europe, which has changed significantly since the beginning of the migration crises.
In the camps now opened, migrants are not only offered a safe place, but also the opportunity to make their asylum applications in a new framework. The Italian authorities endeavor to minimize the pressure on the national systems, which could possibly have far -reaching effects on migration policy in Europe.
