Code of Building at the Schwabacher Rathaus: The first step towards renovation!

From Monday, October 21st, the historic town hall in Schwabach will be provided with building scaffolding as part of preparations for a possible renovation. This measure is the first step towards a fundamental restoration of the half -timbered building, which may begin in 2027. The city administration has already asked the citizens to understand any restrictions during this phase, while access to the town hall remains ensured.

By the end of the year, craftsmen, especially carpenters, will be active to open parts of the half -timbered facades. The aim of these operations is to analyze the general condition and the wall structure of the town hall in detail. These surveys are crucial to ensure that the upcoming renovation can be carried out both professionally and sustainably.

historical importance of the town hall

Today's town hall was built in 1528/29 and acted not only as the seat of the council, but also as a place for the bread benches and several stream shops that have represented the local craft. Over the centuries, the building learned numerous conversions and extensions that changed its original structure. Particularly noteworthy is the cultivation of an ornamental frame in the north wing between 1901 and 1904 and the exposure of the half -timbered in the main building in 1937. It is assumed that this town hall is already the fourth of its kind in Schwabach.

In 2001 there was a comprehensive renovation. A remarkable special feature of this general renovation was the two golden roofs of the turrets, which were made possible by the purchase of 2,000 sheeted bricks, financed by citizens and friends of the city. The golden gilding is an outstanding feature in connection with the tradition of the remarkable Schwabacher gold leaf. There are various representations at the outer building of the town hall, which range from people to coat of arms and reflect the rich history of the building.

An interesting architectural note is the unusual placement of the town hall directly in front of the west facade of the city church. Within the town hall, the traus hall on the first floor was designed modern and bright, and part of the building is used for regular artbiennals that have been organized under the name "Location" since 1999. The town hall currently also houses the mayor's office and part of the administrative offices. The "golden hall" is used as a meeting room, while the citizens' office represents the central point of contact for the residents and visitors of the city.

The upcoming work not only marks a significant step in the preservation of a valuable cultural heritage, but also ensure that the renovation is carried out in accordance with the guidelines for listed buildings. The historic town hall of Schwabach remains an important part of urban identity and history and conveys the residents and visitors through its architecture and diverse uses of complex cultural impressions.
