Snowwelle rolls in Germany: traffic chaos and icy dangers!

A new weather front ensures alarming conditions in Germany. On January 7, 2025, a snow shaft with fresh snow and ice rain is expected. The weather stays calm until Wednesday before the snowfalls use from the middle of the week. Meteorologist Dominik Jung von Wetter.net warns of massive snowfalls, especially in the low mountain ranges and in the lowlands.

Especially affected regions could be Rhineland-Palatinate, Brandenburg, Saarland, Hesse, Thuringia and parts of Saxony. The snow chip is caused by an air mass border, on which cold polar air hits milder air masses. Rain and ice rain can be expected north of this border, while up to 20 cm of snow could fall south of it.

forecast traffic disruptions and weather developments

The predictions indicate a traffic chaos on Thursday morning, January 9, if the weather conditions are further tightened. A cold wave could follow after the snow front, but the weather models show different developments: The GFS model predicts a permanent onset of winter, while the ECMWF model expects milder weather until weekend.

From Friday, January 10th, it could calm down, but there is a risk of flooding by thaw in the low mountain ranges. As early as January 5, there were numerous accidents in Bavaria due to freezing rain, which illustrates the danger situation.

In addition, a dangerous weather situation was found from Saturday evening, January 4th. Dense clouds first bring snow that turns into freezing rain. Regions from Emsland to the Bavarian Forest are particularly affected. While the temperatures between -2 and +3 degrees vary, the risk of black ice is particularly high at night, which makes many roads mirror -smooth.

On Sunday, the precipitation front moves to the northeast and brings snow and ice rain. A violent thaw effect is expected in the low mountain ranges, while the temperatures in the south could reach up to +12 degrees. Stormy gusts in mountain lines and on the North Sea can reach up to 80 km/h.

For Monday, rainy weather in the west and north is predicted, whereby rain can pass into snow in higher locations. Realization of the smoothness remains especially in the early morning, and on Tuesday a cool current from northwest announces, which brings snow into medium -sized locations. The German Weather Service urgently warns of underestimating the weather.
