Brenner-North creation: CDU demands urgent improvements for railway tracks!

Munich-In the Transport Committee of the Bundestag, there are significant decisions next week that affect the new construction of railway tracks for the Brenner-North round in the Bavarian Inn Valley. The application of Daniela Ludwig, MP of the CDU/CSU, aims to discuss possible improvements in route planning in the hearing on October 16.

Ludwig clearly expressed her support for the new building of two tracks for the Brenner-North cover. The current state of the inventory route, which leads through the municipalities, is unsustainable, especially on the strongly frequented section between Munich and Rosenheim. In view of the massive stress by 2.4 million trucks that drive over the Brenner annually, it is of the greatest urgency to shift freight traffic to rail.

experts invited to clarify

However, this does not happen without challenges. Ludwig emphasizes that the currently planned changes in several places could have significant effects and that farmers endanger their existence. It is therefore necessary to consult experts to optimize the planning. Experts such as a tunnel construction specialist and the Rosenheim district administrator Otto Lederer (CSU) will have their say in the hearing.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has already promoted a large part of the planning on behalf of the Federal Government and set the course of the route. In the coming year, the Bundestag will decide on the billion dollar project, whereby additional proposals from the region will also be taken into account. However, there is currently no detailed cost estimate for the entire project.

technical challenges and cost discussion

The application includes the investigation of alternatives for a linkage site of the new tracks with existing tracks south of Rosenheim. An underground laying was mentioned as a possibility, but is considered problematic by the train due to contractual provisions. The German Center for Rail Transport Research has already indicated that such tunnel compounds do not correspond to the EU guidelines.

In addition, the Union politicians, an extension of the link at Ostermünchen and a crossing in the interior of Rosenheim, are calling for. However, the DB warns of the enormous technical challenges and the estimated additional costs of up to three billion euros for crossing the interior.

Ludwig confirmed that the best possible solution should be prioritized, not the cheapest. The burner north is part of an important European traffic axis and is considered one of the major infrastructure projects of the century. However, the protection of people and nature must come first.

The almost 60-kilometer-long burner north run is intended to create the connection to the Brenner base tunnel, on which work is carried out in Austria and Italy. Citizens' initiatives are committed to the new building and argue that modernization of the existing tracks is sufficient. This solution is also faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

The railway, on the other hand, indicates that intensive discussions with those affected were held in the region in order to incorporate their suggestions into the planning. A DB spokeswoman said the planning aims to ensure an efficient, environmentally friendly and approval -capable route. Around 60 percent of the new line should be underground, which would minimize the intervention in nature.

In the coming week it will be shown which aspects will be given special attention in the hearing and how the results of the discussions will influence the further planning. The present project has the potential to significantly change the transport infrastructure in the region and to strengthen the EU-wide traffic axis.
