Love fraud in the Oberallgäu: police warn of brazen mesh!
Oberallgäu, Deutschland - A 45-year-old man from the Oberallgäu was the victim of a skillful fraud that was carried out over several months. The perpetrator contacted the man on an internet platform in early September and pretended to be interested in a serious relationship. The contact finally shifted to a messenger service, where the fraudster repeatedly demanded money from the man in the form of codes from credit cards. In the hope of a real connection, the man sent these codes several times.
The fraud's escalating climax occurred on December 26th when the perpetrator sent a manipulated photo of a supposedly kidnapped woman and asked for money again. This step caused the man to recognize the fraud and inform the police. The Kempten police inspection subsequently warned of such fraud stitches and advised to exercise skepticism in online contacts.
Tips from the police for fraud prevention
- be skeptical about early financial demands.
- Do not transfer any money and do not transmit codes of payment cards.
- Contact the local police if you suspect fraud or reimburse a complaint.
In addition, there are reports on another fraudulent stitch that deals with the manipulation of voucher cards. In an article from ZDF, it is pointed out that fraudsters steal voucher cards in retail stores, copy the line codes and stick them over the codes of other voucher cards. This activates the money value on the original card when scanning the cards that keep the fraudsters. Buyers only find out when redeeming that the voucher is worthless.
The Bavarian Consumer Center recommends checking the barcode before buying vouchers and informing the dealer and filing the police in the suspicion. However, legal liability for such fraud is unclear what additional problems for consumers and dealers have. A measure proposed by experts to take vouchers behind the cash register to prevent theft and manipulation has not yet been mandatory.
These reports illustrate the need to be vigilant and to find out about common fraud stitches in order not to be victims themselves. Further information on the fraud stitches can be found at Allgäuhit and ZDF .
