Skoda Elroq: Elektro-SUV comes for a combat price-revolution for buyers!
In the rapidly changing automotive industry, Skoda brings a breath of fresh air to the debate about electromobility with the new electric SUV Elroq. CEO Klaus Zellmer claims that this model can compete for the first time with comparable combustion vehicles. The entry price of the ElroQ is 33,900 euros, which is only slightly above the entry -level price category of the popular Karoq, which is already established. This could strengthen the purchase interest of potential customers that have so far been deterred by the high prices of electric cars.
The ElroQ marks a turning point in the discussion about the costs of electric vehicles, especially in view of the high production costs for electrical drives. Zellmer emphasizes that the SUV models are simply equivalent in terms of equipment and price: "There has never been a lot, and it will be a crucial lever when asked," he says optimistically. This development coincides with a drop in price for the models of the sister company Volkswagen, such as ID.3. The picture that Zellmer outlines from the demand is therefore promising. Consumers could soon seriously consider switching to electric models due to the comparable prices.
A hard price war is imminent
The Skoda boss warns of the challenges that are associated with this pricing policy. Due to new CO₂ requirements at EU level, he sees a hard competition for market shares in the e-segment. This could lead to the margins of the manufacturers under pressure and the residual values of the electric vehicles also suffer. "We will experience an incomparable price war in the electric vehicles segment. Everyone will try to achieve their goals," explains Zellmer.
This price war could play a crucial role in the general acceptance of electromobility. So far, many buyers hesitated to invest in an electric vehicle, since the price differences to conventional cars were often very large. The ElroQ could change this and open a new chapter in the electric vehicles segment, which is attractive for many drivers.
In the middle of these developments, Skoda, like other brands in the Volkswagen Group, also initiated savings measures. Zellmer speaks of a savings goal of 5.6 billion euros by 2030. A significant part of these savings is to be achieved by reducing areas in the non-productive range. It is estimated that around 12,000 employees who do not work in production will be reduced to less than 10,000 by 2028. However, this should be done without any operational terminations, which is a certain relief for the employees. The new Elroq: Details and Perspectives
The Skoda Elroq is the first pure electric vehicle (BEV) positioned in a popular segment of compact SUV and offers a variety of drive and battery options. Ranges of over 560 kilometers are possible in the WLTP cycle, with the drive strengths between 125 and 220 kW (168 to 295 hp) vary. The market launch in Europe is planned for the first quarter of 2025, while the configurator has been available for the order since the beginning of October.
In another point, Zellmer emphasizes the synergies, from which Skoda benefits as part of the Volkswagen Group. He explains that his company's higher sales returns are primarily due to these synergies. It remains interesting to observe how the dynamics in the area of electric vehicles will develop, especially when it comes to the question of whether alternative fuels such as e-fuel can be a possible solution for the existing fleet of combustion vehicles.
The challenges that the current market conditions bring with them require a high degree of adaptability from the automotive manufacturers. While Zellmer points to the quick transformation of the industry, he also expresses concerns about the introduction of hard deadlines for the expiry of internal combustion engines in new cars. For him, the electronically supported drive remains an important variant for the future to further reduce CO₂ emissions. To what extent helps the ElroQ to strengthen the acceptance of electric vehicles, remains to be seen and could benefit both Skodas and the industry as a whole.
