Waldmeister celebrates its premiere in Vienna: a storm of confusion!

on April 14, 2025, as part of the anniversary year Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna, the operetta "Waldmeister" will be presented in the museum district in Vienna. The guest appearance of the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz Munich offers a new production under the direction of Josef E. Köpplinger. The premiere took place in Munich on April 10, 2025 and met with promising response.

"Waldmeister" is reinterpreted as a subversive crewball comedy and shows the central action of a group of young people who flee from a storm in a forest mill, where their fate is determined by numerous misunderstandings and complications. Together with an impressive ensemble, which, among other things, shows the chamber actor Robert Meyer in the role of official chief Christof Heffele, the staging will offer a lively and entertaining experience. Chamber singer Daniel Prohaska, Anna-Katharina Tonauer and Sophia Keiler are other main actors of the performance.

historical context of the operetta

"Waldmeister", a tribute to the delight, was written a good twenty years after "Die Batraus" by Johann Strauss. The operetta, which has many of the typical characteristics of the genre, has received special importance in the Vienna music scene over the years. The development of the operetta goes back to the 18th century, and important composers such as Franz von Suppè and Johann Strauss (son) contributed to the popularity.

The enthusiasm of the Viennese audience for the operetta has its roots in the musical interludes, which are considered preliminary stages to the operetta. Jacques Offenbach in particular sparked a great passion with his works that contributed to the birth of the Viennese operetta, which finally started on November 24, 1860 with the premiere of "Das Pensionat" by Franz von Suppè. This genre development continued until the silver era of the operetta around 1900, which was shaped by other important composers and had a lasting impact on the music culture of Vienna.

In view of this historical dimension, the staging of “Waldmeister” is not only a return to the roots of the operetta, but also a celebration of immortal music and tradition that this art form has recognized. As part of the Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna anniversary, “Waldmeister” becomes an important event in the theater landscape.
