Speyer celebrates 175 years of stamps: an anniversary full of history!

Speyer, Deutschland - Speyer, the city with history, celebrates a very special anniversary in November! 175 years ago she was one of the first three German cities to publish stamps. A milestone that revolutionized the postal story!

in November 1849, at the order of the general administration of the royal posts and railways in Munich, the era of stamped stamps began. On October 24, it was decided that letters can only be franked with these brands. Before that, the fees had to be noted by hand - a cumbersome process that has now belonged to the past!

The beginnings of the stamps in Speyer

The "Royal Bavarian Upper Postamous" in Speyer, which was housed in the old coin until 1901, offered brands for one, three and six cruisers, depending on the weight of the letter. The brands were devalued by hand, later with the famous mill wheel stamp, which was borne by a number that was assigned to the post offices. For Speyer, this was first number 325, later 493. These stamps were in use until 1869 before the city received its own place stamp, which are still known today.

an association with Tradition

The Stamp Cam Collection Association (BSV) Speyer has processed this exciting story. Founded in 1907 and 1925, the club today has 80 members. But the challenge is great: "It is very difficult to get offspring," complains Chairman Markus Steuerwald. In order to keep the tradition alive, the association relies on cooperation with other local associations and, thanks to a generous donation, has commissioned an advertising agency to redesign the club media. A step that is supposed to bring a breath of fresh air to the philatelic community!
